-- Interview with author Paromita Goswami --

Q: Shamsuddin's Grave” made you a published author, how does it feel?
A: On top of the world. When you dream of something you work hard to achieve it. Nothing matters more when you live it up.

Q: After “Shamsuddin's Grave” what can we expect from you in the future?
A: I have been pretty much busy since Shamsuddin’s Grave happened to me. It’s like someone has unleashed the hidden dreams within me. As far as writing is concerned, I am now working on a collection of short stories, paranormal, based on the jungle theme of Chhattisgarh. The book explores the tribal practices of van devta and other deities. I have set up Raipur Little Minds Book Reading Club which is one of its kinds in my city. The club is getting overwhelming response from the people and I thank my stars for that. The club aims at developing reading habits in children through physical Meet ups every month. We also have online platform where the members can share their views and stay connected.

Q: Why did you select fiction as a genre to write? Is the story inspired from real life events or is it completely fictional?
A: Every writer is inspired by some real life incident because books are the reflection of the society. Shamsuddin’s Grave is more of factual documentation of social issues.

Q: Can you tell us about the process of ideating the characters in “Shamsuddin's Grave” and then bringing them to life by your writing?
A: Shamsuddin’s Grave has two protagonist portraying two different sections of our society. Latika is the strong female lead of the urban society while Shamsuddin depicts the life of a poor section of people from the rural areas. Apart from these two there are several more playing important roles. For me, a character is an independent identity and they choose their own course of action.

Q: Other than writing, what else do you do professionally?
A: I am a travel writer, a book blogger and a singer.

Q: When did you decide that you want to be a writer? What inspired you to take it up?
A: I think I was born to write. Since young I had this habit of diary collection where I wrote my stories and poems. My dad is my biggest inspiration. He was a fabulous storyteller and a writer.

Q: Do you read as much as you write? Which are your favorite books?
A: Yes I love reading. I think every writer does it. Reading helps you imagine more. I have grown up with classics like Great Expectations, Ben hur, Amar Chitra Katha and many more. I have a big list of favorite authors.

Q: Writers block, have you ever faced it? How did you come out of it?
A: Many a times. If I have one I need a break for few hours. I watch movies, meet friends, go shopping. Do anything to forget what I was writing. After I return, I am back at my flow.

Q: Two things that you like and dislike the most about life?
A: I am an open book and very blunt at words. Sometimes people hate me for that. But those who know me say that I have a big way of promoting others.

Q: You prefer reading e-books or you love the traditional paper/hard back books?
A: I love the feel of paperbacks.

Q: If your book is made into a Bollywood film, which actors/actresses would you want to be a part of it?
A: That’s a very interesting question. You got me thinking now. I think I will love to have Nawazuddin Siddiqui as Shamsuddin, Tabu as Latika and Irrfan Khan as Debjyoti.

Q: How long did it take you to write “Shamsuddin's Grave”?
A: Writing part took almost three months but research took about an year or so.

Q: Other than writing, what are your other interests?
A: Did I tell you I am a great singer?

Q: One message that you would want to convey to our readers?
A: A book doesn’t make a writer but the reader does. Without readers the process of writing a book is incomplete.  So read as much as you can. There are many beautiful stories waiting for you.

Q: How can our readers connect with you?
A: On email authorparomita@gmail.com, Facebook and Twitter @authorparomita
